Let’s get right into this.
Wait a minute, I have two sideline issues that I need to mention first: (a) I cannot put into words strong enough to express my disgust for that chessy mess of a song written by Kara DioGuardi. I know that every year the American Idol winner’s song is stupid, but this was just a special kind of stupid. And, (b) I’m not sure why Simon Cowell even had buttons on that shirt. That was just ridiculous. Now, on to the performers:
1. Kris Allen, Contestant’s Choice: “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers – I will admit again that I have totally underestimated Kris all season. I have thought him to be boring with a few occasional surprisingly (to me) good performances. When he sang this song earlier in the season, he showed what potential he had. Tonight, in his reprise, I believe he was even better than the first time.
Simon Fuller’s Choice: “What’s Goin’ On” by Marvin Gaye – I was very concerned when we were told what Simon Fuller (creator of “American Idol” and the Spice Girls) had chosen for Kris. This is as iconic as “One” last week. Those Brits seemingly love to throw challenges out there to give those that think are really good a chance at greatness or flopping. Kris did not flop. Far from it. The judges that did not believe he did something special to “make the song his own” were being plain dopey. I had thought “Ain’t No Sunshine” (both times) were Kris’s best performances this season. Then, he surpassed that with this song 12 minutes later.
Common Song: “No Boundaries” by Kara DioGuardi and two others – This terrible song of drivel, in my opinion, was written for the expected winner Adam. While Kris couldn’t do much with it, I will say that he was competent with it. My bias could very be showing here, but I honestly feel that he performed Adam’s song better than Adam. I hated both versions, but I tolerated Kris’s more.
2. Adam Lambert, Contestant’s Choice: “Mad World” by Tears For Fears – Oh, the drama of Adam. The lighting. The smoke. The long coat. The boots. It’s all about the “Adam Lambert Experience” as he now always feels that he has to be bigger than the song. Maybe it is because of all the hype about him and him feeling that he has to live up to it. Maybe he is bored with just plain singing (or he fears we would be bored if he just sang without all the theatrics). I don’t know. But, this performance is a primary example of why I think Adam will not sell albums. His game works the first time he does something, but I am not excited whatsoever to see it a second time. When he first did this song earlier in the season, it was surprising and haunting and stood out. When he did a second time, I (for one) did not care and actually fast-forwarded my DVR a quarter of the way through his performance. Of course, he is a good singer, but, if even he doesn’t think that is enough, I’m not going to feel bad for not caring.
Simon Fuller’s Choice: “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke – Another chance at flopping or greatness with an iconic song. When Sam Cooke sings this, you know he is singing about a change in society. When Adam Lambert sings it, it seems like he is singing that HE is the change that is coming. He has made some good choices in the past of holding back from his customary over-the-top shrieking on the right songs. Not last night with this one. Adam remains polarizing to the end. If you like his over-the-top act, then this was for you. If you never liked it, well, you know where I’m going. If you are in the middle (like me), you just want him to do it at the right times. On “Cryin’”, shriek away. On “A Change is Gonna Come”, not so much. But, maybe that’s just me.
Common Song: “No Boundaries” by Kara DioGuardi and two others – How many more ways can I talk about the awfulness of the song? Adam did the best he could and did act out the song in addition to singing it. I am not an Adam hater, so I’ll just leave this song alone.
At the beginning of this season, the son of one of my very best friends commented that Adam is “so now” or “current” (I can’t remember exactly which one). Mrs. RAD has commented rather to the opposite that Adam is more “retro-outrageous” and is not very original at all. But, while everyone has been talking about the Adam phenomenon all season, Kris has quietly shown up every week too and humbly stated this week that he belongs as well. Adam might be “current”, but that doesn’t mean he is “tomorrow” as well. He is a passing fad like Acid-washed jeans. I am having a tough time imaging an entire album of Adam Lambert songs, and I know I wouldn’t buy it. Meanwhile, as soon as Kris’s version of “What’s Goin’ On” is available on iTunes, I am getting it. As much as it is derided, there is a reason that “pop music” sells. It is popular. And, so is Kris.
Adam has his definite fan base and so does Kris. The other contestant who also had a fan base this season was Daniel Gokey. Surely, many of them have gone away and are not voting with him gone. But, for those that will vote, can you see them going for Adam?
American Idol Winner Prediction: Kris Allen
Take care. Your comments are much appreciated.

As soon as I started watching this episode, I found out that I was over this whole season. I barely have any observations about the performances or the show this week in general. I thought Kris' "What's Goin On?" was the standout performance, while Adam had the standout outfit (surprise, surprise). So instead, let me get quasi-philosophical:
ReplyDeleteI said it a week or two ago in the since-dubbed "Blogmerican Idol" rant that Adam was really just Norman Gentle with bigger chops. And its true. So here's the question: if you were voting for Adam all season just so you could "see what he'd do next", why bother this week? Either way, he's gone. Winning (or not) will have almost zero effect on his future success (Prediction: a spectacularly quick slide into obscurity as his act gets old, unless he's smart and embraces his theatrical side and goes into musical theater.) Isn't the only remaining "what will he do" this: "What will his reaction be if he loses"?
For the first time, I'm intrigued. Will he be able to keep up his "I'm just happy to be here, and I love all my fellow competitors" act? Hasn't he obviously expected to win for weeks? We all know how he'll react if he wins. Fake gratitude to mask his sense of entitlement, a big hug and over-the-top praise for Kris and the others, maybe some tears. Booorrring.
Let's see what happens if Kris wins. Please???
In case there was any doubt, the preceeding unsigned post was brought to you by TMC.

Crap, I see a trend that I'm not enjoying...again I agree with TMC. I found last nights show to be B-O-R-I-N-G, seriously, a yawn fest. I think it's my utter disappointment in the removal of Alison (I really miss her).
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Kris on the first song, couldn't care less about the second song but didn't agree with the judges at all.
Onto that mess of a judge/song....Kara, you vile witch. First off you vilify Kris for not making last weeks song - that you picked for him (Too Late to Apologize)- his own. And this week you swarm him with compliments about how he makes all his songs his own. Stop talking out of both sides of your mouth.
Secondly, you can not in good conscience, sit there and tell Kris Allen that the drivel you wrote was really not in his register. How could you write that crap and not realize it would jeopardize one of the contestants?? And Kris knew it wasn't for him as he looked miserable singing that dreck. She can't claim she wrote that weeks ago, it must have been thrown together during the week. Personally, if I had to be stuck with the radio on with that song playing and cutting my ears off wasn't an option, I would prefer Kris' version....scary but true.
I found the whole show anti-climactic and think tonights show will be the same. I seemed to have lost interest as I was never a fan of either of these two contestants. Tonight, it boils down to the guy expected to win vs. the guy who flew under the radar and proved to be a worthy contender. Whomever wins, it will not be from my votes and their albums will not be bought by me either.
I'm actually more intrigued to walk past Southern Hospitality and see if TMC and PIC reveal themselves. Since I live on 87th & york and SH is on 77th & 2nd, chances are slim to none on that happening as well.
I hear Steve Martin will be performing on the banjo this evening....that should be fun - although I'd prefer a return performance from Fantasia....the lips, the hair, the velvet outfit, the dance...the angry face.....I remember it so well. I find it fitting that the title of the song was "You Bore Me".
I had an off-blog conversation with Lorri about the show and I'm going to repeat myself here.
ReplyDeleteI don't like Kara, the results show should be 30 min max (I don't like the guest performances) and next season I might just go back to watching the auditions only.
RAD - your blog is what keeps me into the show at this point. They should pay you. (feel free to forward my comments to them).
Ohhh boy kids....wow. um. yeah.
ReplyDeleteYou all know I have lots of respect for the instrument in Adam's throat and what it has the ability to do....there is still no denying it... I also enjoyed his holding back from the screaming... that being said - noooo he would NOT really fit into musical theater. Musical theater is not about people screaming out songs and being completely over the top. That would be a DRAG QUEEN SHOW or DISNEY show...and I don't frequent those, or consider them truly broadway.
He's one of those freak of nature talents... that just doesn't fit into any box ... so someone has to figure out a plan for him. Hopefully he doesn't win, and he can go off and get a record contract with Madonna's company and be a part of her circus. lol
He will sell records. Trust me, the Queens and the Fag Hags will ALL buy it. (and I love the Queens and the Fag Hags!!!)... then he will find his way to doing a Barbara/Cher review show in Vegas, and make LOTS of money. Done.
That's Adam's future for sure.
Kris, was BRILLIANT last night. I actually never vote... but Monday I voted for Shawn on Dancing with the Stars and she won... so last night I voted for Kris... and I'm hoping the same comes true tonight.
Coming from a songwriters perspective, I do not want to comment on Kara's song, for fear that my songs will be ripped apart the same way I'd like to rip her's apart.
You see how all the other contestants love Adam and love each other... Alison said she was like his little sister... so he can't be all smoke and mirrors like last night... he can't be all that bad and all that fake, he's just being directed HORRIBLY.
I WILL BE AT SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY... meeting a few friends there.... so TMC and PIC, will I see you there???????
I'M SO READY FOR SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE!!!! Anyone??? (cue crickets.....)
WHO KNEW Anthony Hopkins loved AI?!?!? Do you think he went out for fava beans before the show? lol
Whew, Bitter Biddle captured my feelings EXACTLY, better even than I could! Boring, anti-climatic, and the piece de resistance: "Personally, if I had to be stuck with the radio on with that song playing and cutting my ears off wasn't an option, I would prefer Kris' version....scary but true."
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for SYTYCD!!!!
Sadly, TMC and PIC will *not* be there (as posted at the end of the comments section of the last RAD post). No one committed, then PIC got a much-coveted reservation at Momofuku Ko....we didn't know until today that anyone else was contemplating showing up. If you want a clue to the TMC/PIC team in lieu of their presence, check out their OTHER foray into the blogosphere at http://theroamingfoodie.blogspot.com/...a Ko review is sure to be there soon, too!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the show (if you can).
