Final Result - Win-Win-Win Edition

Mrs. RAD, Mrs. RAD's Mom, and I watched most of the season finale of the usual fluff and filler with the sound muted. Before commenting on the actual result, a few observations on the moments that caused us to take notice (even if it was mostly morbid train-wreck notice) and briefly turn-up the volume:

* Boy, how desperate is Kara DioGuardi to stay on this show next season? The "Check-Your-Self-Respect-At-The-Door" Network strikes again. I know just about everyone (me, very included) has turned against her as the season wore on (with the crescendo coming with the double debut of that "song" she wrote), but it seemed rather pitiful that she would consent to remind us of that ridiculous feud with the obviously troubled "Bikini Girl". And, to do it in such spectacular fashion (pun pitifully intended) with her own bikini was pretty sad. Mrs. RAD said that it was just embarrassing for everyone involved (including us as viewers). Mrs. RAD's Mom felt bad that Kara's dream of a successful singing career that she so desperately wanted was never (and will never be) fulfilled and also tried to convince me that my one-year old daughter would never hate her father as much as "Bikini Girl" obviously hates hers. Fingers crossed.

* We sure did get a lot of Megan Joy tonight, didn't we? Suffice it to say that was just a visual observation, and we felt no compulsion whatsoever to hear if her singing ability had improved since her ouster many weeks ago. However, it is mildly interesting that the producers are still trying to push her on us. The only contestant to get more favoritism than her this season was Adam. Could we possibly be hearing of a FOX Television series dramedy pilot deal starring Megan (for comedy) and Adam (for drama, of course) in the very near future?

* I am probably the only one that thinks this, but, on the few occasions we saw her this season, I was always pretty impressed with Tatiana Del Toro's singing voice. But, of course, she might be the craziest, mentally unstable personality we have ever seen on this show in eight seasons. I really hope that was all a stupid act or that her family performs an intervention on her soon before it is too late.

* Ending the non-results filler part of the show with Adam and Kris dueting on "We Are the Champions" by Queen? You're kidding, right? Biased towards Adam all the way to the end I see. Can you imagine being in Kris's head when he was told they were doing that? Why not just have everyone on stage wearing Katy Perry capes embroidered with Adam's name while he and Kris duet a song from "Wicked"?

American Idol Winner Prediction: Kris Allen
Actual American Idol Winner: Kris (The best possible result for EVERYONE)

Kris is the humble underdog winner that makes for a great American story. Adam gets even more publicity for being upset than even if he had won as expected. As mentioned yesterday by commenter Curly QT (saw you on Fox NY 5, by the way), he can now sign with a record company that might have a clue what to do with him (which I guarantee "19 Entertainment" had none). Fox got the ratings of having a compelling favorite vs underdog of stark opposites finale. This was a satisfying ending to what had turned into a less than compelling season. Of course, it would have been more satisfying for me if it were Allison in the end (for goodness sakes, RAD, let it go)…

One more Mrs. RAD observation regarding Kara's song to end the season and start the American Idol Kris's career: "…so, it took three people to write that song????"

So, that's it. On a personal note, I want to sincerely thank all the readers, supporters, and commenters of this blog. It has been quite fun sharing my opinions with you, and you putting up with them and even encouraging me further along the way. I have not decided if I will back next season, so, if this is it, thank you everyone again, take care, and enjoy the music.

Now, on to "So You Think You Can Dance"!

  1. I won't watch next season if there is no RAD on AI. Just saying... :)

I agree that it was the best possible outcome for everyone but I didn't even care who would win - isn't that sad?

And TMC - now I'm hungry! I might check out some of your fav places.

  2. it was a good run...as usual I had way too much wine and my stupid DVR kept cutting off and then bring me 'live' so I missed many good moments. Luckily I was there for KISS and Adam in his KISS boots.

I'm with CSC - no idol blog next year and i will have to not watch the show. Also contemplating a boycott if Kara returns...she's Randy in a skinny white girls body.

TMC, not showing was just out of character. How fantastic would it have been if we all saw you on the news chatting it up with the lovely Curly QT?

The food blog is making me hungry too. So how was dinner? Did you even watch AI?

  3. Last night's show didn't hold my interest in the slightest. I looked up occasionally to laugh at the bizarre performance concepts (Sorry, Danny...you just missed the top two, so here's you consolation prize: Lionel Ritchie!)

I even missed Kara's sad, sad flashdance the first time and PIC had to rewind the DVR. I have only one possible defense for this...maybe Steve Martin paid her to do that, to ensure that he wouldn't take the "most awkward and unnecessary" award without a fight?

Adam with Kiss seemed like a great way to end his Idol run. Natually, they screwed it up by making them do a Queen duet afterward. Queen? Really? These producers aren't big fans of subtlety, are they?

My closing joke for the season was going to be "Which is more sad: the idol song or the fact that it took three people to write it?" Well played by Mrs. RAD in beating me to the punch.

And with that, I have nothing else to add. I'm glad Kris won, but I won't miss the show at all. Summer reruns lead to more outdoor activities (not ALL of which are drinking), and that's a good thing.

    It's been fun.

  4. I cannot believe I dragged my ass all the way to the upper east side to watch at Southern Hospitality, and neither TMC or PIC were there...

Did any of you see me on Fox 5 news??? If you DVR'd it and extended the recording, you'll catch me touching my boobs (I was very excited that Kris won!) LMAO....

Great show... LOVED Kiss and Queen .... BUT MOST OF ALL CYNDI LAUPER... that number was amazing.

Now, who's gonna start the SYTYCD blog?!?!?!?!?

It's been a RAD season... you better not think about quitting us!!!!

  5. Sorry Curly! After seeing no responses regarding the SH suggestion from May 14 to May 18, TMC and PIC made other plans...and tried to make that fact known! (Check the comments section of the May 13 RAD post.) We had every intention of showing if people were on board, and no intention of dragging anyone up there with no payoff! Our apologies!

  6. As an Upper East Sider (at least until May 29th)...I take offense to the "drag myself up there" it's still Manhattan people!! LOL.

  7. As an ex-upper east sider (96th and 2nd love)and it being one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city - - and now being a home owner in Brooklyn, anything above 14th street to me is dragging my ass. Not that I mind dragging my ass, it's a fun ass to drag around .... but it just takes me over an hour to get back and forth to there...

That being said, it was well worth it... totally fun place, great food, fun people watching with us, prime seat at the bar... and getting exposed (literally) on TV! hahahah

Ohhhh Leslie!!! YOU MISSED CYNDI AND ALLISON SING TIME AFTER TIME!?!?!?!?!? WHAAAAATTTT?????? :(
