Top 4 - Scream Edition

And, then there were four…

Before we get started, I want to announce the very welcome return of Mrs. RAD’s interjections to the commentary this week after a two week absence. Let me tell you, she had some built-up American Idol frustration that needed some release after her hiatus. Thank goodness, this week’s “final four” episode provided several awkward moments for such outbursts.

To begin, the impact of the misreporting of a Neil Diamond week continues to reverberate a week later. The disappointment felt by Mrs. RAD, due to her anticipation of Kris singing “Forever in Blue Jeans” being denied, was only further exacerbated by the appearance this week of Guns-n-Roses’s Slash in the mentor role. “Wait a minute: no Neil Diamond, but instead I get Slash?!? This is a traveshamockery, and a boycott must begin!” (You don’t even want to know the reaction when I informed her that Jamie Foxx was the mentor last week.) And, one more obvious thing on this subject: Slash – in ANY mentor position?! Much less, singing? Moving on. After a glass of wine, I was able to coax her back and we un-paused the DVR…

Danny SHOULD Go
Allison WILL Go (I have no faith anymore)
The Judges (All of them, including Simon) MUST Go

4. Kris Allen (Last Week’s Ranking: 4th), “Come Together” by The Beatles – As regular readers know, I never have much to say about Kris. I understand what Kara’s “marketability” appeal of Kris is about, but I just cannot see him as a winner of the show. He has always bored me. This week, however, I could not help, for the first time, finding myself rooting for him. I would hope that the themes for the weeks are determined far in advance of knowing which contestants would be left, but, whether it was intentional or not, this was not a genre to showcase Kris’s strengths. Maybe he could have picked a better song (Mrs. RAD suggested Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” that was wrongly recommended by Kara for Allison), but I feel that he was pretty stuck in a no-win situation. Despite his struggles, the ladies seem to love him, and I have more faith in his fan base to rally to his cause and save him than just about anyone else.

3. Allison Iraheta (3rd), “Cry Baby” by Janis Joplin – First of all, ummmm, Adam has had his own hair girl throughout the competition? One that he has had for two years? Stop it. I do not even know why I am acting surprised by this revelation. I will admit when Allison picked this song, I openly cringed. You do NOT pick Janis Joplin unless you going to absolutely crush it (like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef-f-l2Pbn8). I definitely felt she could have lifted Grace Slick’s “Somebody to Love” to great heights (or, Freddie Mercury’s “Somebody to Love” for that matter, as Simon confused). But, after the opening line of Allison’s performance, Mrs. RAD exclaimed, “Wow. This is excellent. She sounds just like Janis, but far from in a karaoke way…”. All I can say is that she is still my favorite, that is not going to change (even if she goes), and all the judges are utter dopes. And, I am happy that she is not going down meekly. It definitely would have been trite (Mrs. RAD’s word) for HER (not Kris) to do “Piece of My Heart”, and she was right to tell those dummies so. And, yes Adam, her hair did look great finally. Thanks for the help.

2. Danny Gokey (2nd), “Dream On” by Aerosmith – So, is he trying to get me to stop saying that he is screaming at me by screaming a song that he is supposed to scream? I don’t care: Danny, stop screaming at me! And, Mrs. RAD just could not get past the satin-backed vest with the purple shirt. I have to apologize for appearing to be a Gokey-hater now, but that performance could have been seen at any University of Wisconsin frat house with a karaoke machine. This is where his tragic background story is probably going to come into play to keep him out of danger, in my opinion. Otherwise, he would be my pick to go.

A quick pause for a comment on the worthlessness that is Kara Dioguardi. Okay, that’s being a little mean, but, when she had “five words for us: ‘that was the best performance of the night’”, I dismissed it as being caught up in the moment. When she called “Studio 54” Studio 57 instead, I just forgave her for being young and confused. But, now, when you are actually in the music industry and you call “Crazy” “early Aerosmith”, as if it was supposed to be earlier than “Dream On”, then I have no excuse but to call you dumb and have no further hope for you. Please be quiet, Kara, from now on. I would rather listen to Paula rather than you. I hope you realize how bad that is.

1. Adam Lambert (1st), “Whole Latta Love” by Led Zepplin – Face it. This was supposed to be Adam’s week to do whatever he wanted to blow our doors off. I think that worked against him. He has thrived on turning whatever theme of the week on its head to entertain (some would say, shock) the audience and turn things to his advantage. But, what happens when the genre theme is turned to your advantage? Adam couldn’t seem to figure out how to surprise us and live up to his weekly anticipatory hype. I felt this song choice was too easy, and, honestly, found nothing special about it. Maybe, I’m the dummy, but I believe the judges exuberantly lavish praise upon him was a bit of over-correction after they felt themselves and Adam’s voters (whoever you are) getting complacent, which sent him to the Bottom 2 last week. Don’t get me wrong, he never performs badly, but I have grown tired of the act. We’ll see what the Midwest has to say about this.
A brief word about the duets (also known as “time fillers”):
Kris and Danny, “Renegade” by Styx – After my dog listened to the first stanza, he left the room, went to bed, and did not come back. Also, Danny, stop screaming at me.

Adam and Allison, “Slow Ride” by Foghat – Yes, they will both release albums whether they win or not. And, yes, they will have a duet with each other on those albums. And, if Kara calls Adam or anybody else on this show a rock “god” one more time, I will openly pray for the appropriate lightening strikes.

Bottom 2 Prediction: Allison and Adam

Can’t wait to see your comments on this one!

  1. TMC will be staying brief this week:

    1) After weeks of me applauding Kris for not beating himself by always picking the right song, he beat himself and picked the wrong song. It figures. Still, it wasn't *awful* and he'll probably be fine.

    2) Danny, that was atrocious. After weeks of steady and boring, you finally broke out last week. This week, you just broke. *I* could've done a better approximation of the primal scream in "Dream On", and I can't sing. At all. Oh, and the Aerosmith song that was made for Danny's voice was not "Crazy", anymore than it was "early Aerosmith". His voice would've played VERY well with the tempo and register of "Janie's Got a Gun". It's also somewhat less well known, so it could've been more original. Yes, I am ignoring the fact that the producers would never approve a song with that "subject material" in 1000 years. It's still the answer to "What Aerosmith song could Danny have pulled off?" Also, the vest was bad, but I hardly noticed because I was distracted by the KMart chain. It's like he saw Adam's outfit and said "Me too...but not really."

    3. Speaking of "Dream On", PIC pointed out that Adam could've rocked that song. I don't like him, but he would've made "Dream On" special. I didn't find his Zeppelin special at all, but I don't claim to be entirely objective in my analysis of Adam. Watching his Dad awkwardly pretend to be proud was fun, though.

    4. Allison...you're in trouble again. I actually thought the performance was strong, and she brought a lot of personality to it. But it's entirely true that she looks lost and small as soon as the music stops. Smearing your lipstick all over your chin with the mic doesn't help the "uncomfortably young" vibe at all either. Before that happened, though, the outfit was by far the best yet...and I doubt anyone without HD saw the lipstick anyway. Still, she will probably go home tonight. I think the thorough beating Danny took from the judges proves sufficient to rally the sympathy base (at least) one more time.

    A few final thoughts:
-Randy (and others) did Allison a disservice by holding her to a higher standard b/c she's a "rocker". I'm confused why Danny and Kris get props for "trying", while Allison gets smacked around for being better than they were.

-Kara is awful. It was the rocker outfit that got to me more than jumbled sense of musical trivia (though heaven help anyone that draws RAD's considerable wrath on THAT subject). Shirley Manson meets Shirley Temple is not a good look. Rock Gawwd.

-Kris and Danny sounded fantastic together. As in MUCH better than either of them has ever sounded solo. Maybe when Rascal Flatts die of old age (2010? 2012?), Danny can call Kris when he's trying to keep their spirit alive.

-I sarcastically predicted Billy Crudup as this week's host. Who knew they'd be able to do even worse?

  2. I have been waiting for your update RAD!

I attempted to actually watch the entire show this week because I thought the Rock category would be interesting. And, I loooove me some Classic Rock, although I didn't know they would all pick Classic Rock songs.

I did not, however, watch the entire show but only because my husband caught my stomach bug and I had to be a little "wifely" and take care of him. Especially since I gave it to him...

Anyway, I liked Adam's performance. Was it anything super duper amazing? No, but I don't really want you to make Led "your own". Sing it like it should be sung. And he did that and did a pretty good job. Rock God - hmmmm. but it was my favorite performance (out of the 5 I saw). I thought maybe he should have done some G&R since he has that type of voice.

Allison - I liked it but didn't love it. I would not have picked "Cry Baby" but Janis was a decent choice for her. Her pants distracted me though - were they pants or tights? Leather, pleather or just sparkly?

Kris - fine but bland. He is bland in general though.

Danny - I missed it! And looooooove Aerosmith. It doesn't seem like I missed much.

Duet 1 - Danny was better than Kris. I liked the song choice, although neither of them qualify as renegades. LOL.

Duet 2 - Better than Duet 1, and Allison did better in the duet than she did in her solo performance. However, I actually didn't like the song choice. I like Slowride as a song, and I like its association with Dazed and Confused, but it is sort of an easy song. I mean, that's the song I play on Guitar Hero because it is repetitive and only has so many chords. They could have picked something much more interesting considering they are the two best singers left (in my opinion) and Rock should really suit them.

The thing I found interesting is that they paired Kris and Danny vs Allison and Adam. Like the bottom two vs the top two - and they had Allison and Adam duet their duet last to close out the show. It seemed like maybe they were trying to use the duets to bolster the voting.

Slash as a mentor. Well I like G&R and we have the same hair so I can't hate on him too much, but he didn't really have much to offer as a mentor. But then neither did last week's mentor. At least they are mixing up the types of mentors so they are not all muzak people...

Do you think most of the viewers even heard these songs before??? LOL

  3. First let's begin with the problems of the stage and Ryan saying, "as they say in Hollywood, the show must go on"....didn't this origninate in the theater, on the GREAT WHITE WAY???? Anyhow, let the Bitter ranting begin.

SLASH?!?!?!?!?????? Really? Shocking but it was great to watch him sell out like that. Although I'm not sure sure of his sobriety and fear what other influences (besides he knowledge of rock and roll and pure douchebag for lead singers) he brought to these 4 finalists - especially Alison. I've read Nikki Sixx's Heroin Diaries - Slash & Nikki had a good time together and a love of all things bad and evil.

Nice 'do Kara - what is that? An ode to Gwen Stefani who is performing tonight? Obviously Alison's stylist got a hold of Kara.

    Onto the performances:

Adam - as expected, he embodied Robert Plant just as he embodies all his characters. I think for a moment he actually forgot that he likes boys.

Alison - first off why didn't any of us think to send her off with the gay guy right from the start? Her hair was amazing as was her outfit. Finally, it worked...we got to see her cute shape in an edgy outfit that isn't too grown up or makes her look like a hooker (RAD's term, not mine). I'm glad she fought back - Piece of My Heart was too obvious - bUT you could see the frustration on her face as she knows her spot is on the line. Talk back BUT be respectful and adorable...slippery slope for her, let's hope it helped her and didn't hurt her.

DUETS????? I like it. I don't like listening to Allen and Gokey. The song was all wrong...Renegade? Are we sure about this? Gokey was difficult to watch as he was sooooo out of his genre.

Kris Allen - BORING....my dog was being a nusance so I focused on his instead which just proves that Kris couldn't keep my attention. What did catch my interest was the ice comment. Then the comment erupted in yet another goofball argument between Si & Ry. This is actually more boring than the performance. Honestly boys, who tells u that America enjoys your snarky banter?!???? Bruce Villanch???

Danny - I'm perplexed. I didn't love it but, it's not his genre. he broke out of his boring normal routine (aside from the yelling) but it just didn't 'grab' me. Poor song choice? Poor genre? Poor Luck? And that necklace? That necklace was horrible and was so for a woman not a man (at least not a man like Gokey). FIRE THE STYLIST, when all else fails, Fire the Stylist - or throw the Stage Manager down the stairs....one or the other.

More duets, definitely the better combo, at least until the Sonny & Cher Variety Hour ending (that was all Adam's doing I'm sure). Adam certainly brought out the fun and confidence in Alison - they totally Vibe off each other. I really want them as the Top 2...fingers crossed.

One final comment...Adam's pants?! The boys' entire body piggybacked on his penis in those things. Holy cow, not appropriate for regular programing. Am I the only one that noticed that? I couldn't have been, my blind grandmother could have seen that.

  4. Addendum Notes: (1) I forgot to mention that all the guys must have gotten the memo that "real gods must, must, must grab the mike stand and carry it around the stage while singing." Bothersome; (2) Mrs. RAD did make special notice of Adam's bare chest and the absolutely hairlessness of it. I did not want to notice, but I cannot be surprised that this narcissist uses a bottle of Nair everyday.

And no, Bitter Biddle, i did not notice the pants and am very happy that it is erased off my DVR forever.

  6. Rock week was not kind to our contestants, friends.

Adam as Robert Plant? Go and wash your mouth out with soap Bitter! Robert Plant is a legend; Adam showed to be just a one-register screamer. At least I finally have something positive to say about him though—props for sharing your hairdresser with Allison.

She, btw, looked great. Loved the hair, loved the outfit, didn’t notice the lipstick smear even on HD (hmm, may need to return to optometrist). I think she’ll suffer from song selection—how many voters know that Janis song? (PS If you haven’t seen “Love Janis” on stage, I highly recommend it.) That said, I was moved to vote for the first time all season—go Allison!

Kris, I’ve been to Conway, Arkansas and I think that song’s going to be a big hit at the cute coffee houses in town there or in North Little Rock. Maybe even a gig at the Clinton Library?

Danny Gokey…wow…even your JT/ William Rast-wishing, NKOB chain-wearing look wasn’t enough to distract me from your absolutely abysmal singing last night. Dream on is right on… Watch the tape back, Danny Boy, you should be going home…

And last, but not least, Kara…she was annoying? Really? I didn’t notice, I was too busy staring at her enormous ears! That was NOT a flattering hairstyle (were it an effort to knock off La Stefani, it could only be classified as ABJECT FAILURE!).

  7. For those of you concerned about my state of mind after the results show, I thank you. I will not let the anger consume me. After taking some time to breathe, I will post fair comments tomorrow. Good night, everybody.
