Top 8 - America's Challenge Edition

This week we shall have a few special guest comments. In addition to my wife’s interjections, my one-year old daughter was awake past her bedtime suffering from a cold. Needless to say she was in a very critical mood, and I am certain that I understood the timing of her occasional yells to be certain judgments towards the aspiring Idol contestants.

“Pick a Song from the Year” theme night. Knowing this, I will do my best to keep the “this song choice by this kid makes me feel from the Age of Dirt” comments to a minimum.

Kris SHOULD Go
Anoop WILL Go
Scott MUST Go

We now return to my ranking from least-chance-to-win to best-chance-to-win format:

8. Scott MacIntyre (Last week’s ranking: 8th) – “The Search is Over” by Survivor - I do give him credit for steping from behind the piano. He had been predictable and beyond boring, and it is too bad that he was forced to switch to “show a different side”. I will continue to contend that there would have been no need for this attempt if the poor dude could just sing better. I have been hoping against hope that he could improve. Sadly, he just cannot. And, my wife’s comments about his pitiful guitar playing are virtually unprintable. I do not believe my baby’s wailing during his efforts to hit high note were intended to be supportive. Sorry, Man. You cannot hold out much longer.

7. Lil Rounds (6th) – “What’s Love Got to Do with It” by Tina Turner - The malpractice by the all of judges towards Lil is bordering on travesty. Week-after-week thay almost implored her to pigeon-hole herself into the “diva/Mary J. Blige” genre. “That’s who you are”. Then, she tries to go there, and predictably, they tell her she does not who she is. Now, granted, going for the iconic Tina Turner song was a main ingredient in this recipe for disaster, but I genuinely feel sorry how she has turned into such a wanna-be looking karaoke performer. She is in deep, deep trouble this week, but, if she can survive elimination, I am rooting for her to forget the prejudiced judges (that’s right, I said it) and sing whatever the hell she wants to sing.

6. Anoop Desai (7th) – “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper – Broken record time. How many times have I said that he sings well? How many times have I said that he seems like a nice guy as long as he is not hopping around trying to look like a gangsta fool? Nice choice of song (for a change). No matter. He bores me, which, of course, is why he keeps reverting back to his wanna-be hip-hop gimmick. Unfortunately, neither persona works. There are better singers and better performers than Anoop in this competition. One more thing, Anoop: stop staring at us when you sing. It’s creepy.

5. Kris Allen (4th) – “All She Wants to Do Is Dance” by Don Henley - If you have read these blogs before, you know that Kris is far from my favorite. So, please take the opinion of last night’s performance of someone who actually “gets” the appeal of him. I submit the comment of my wife: “Ummmm, I don’t like it…not impressed at all…” After that, we talked to each other and paid no more attention to him at all. Then, our daughter cried. I rest my case. After last week’s surprisingly good performance, I now again want him gone. He is destined for this week’s bottom three.

4. Danny Gokey (5th) – “Stand By Me”, Mickey Gilley sorta version – Wife comment: “Seriously? This was the best song he could pick from 1980? Seriously?” However, it allowed Danny to do his earnest, heartfelt, passionate performer thing. I will say half of the same thing about him that I said about Anoop. There are better singers in this competition.

3. Adam Lambert (3rd) – “Mad World” by Tears for Fears – On more than occasion, I have heard from a variety of different people this next comment: this is the one contestant that many have actual anticipation about seeing every week. They do not know if they are going to like whatever he does or not, but, the key is, they want to see it. That’s a statement. Granted, none of these commenters are from the American Idol voting-rich middle part of the country. But, let’s face it: this guy is putting on quite a show every week now and this week was no exception. Honestly, fanastic. Very haunting, dramatic, and in good voice. Good grief, I know Simon was forced to be quick in his critique, but, still, he stood! San Francisco, Hollywood and New York love this. Here’s the question you know I have had from the very beginning: America, are you ready for this?

2. Allison Iraheta (1st) – “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, by Bonnie Raitt – I’m biased so I’ll be quick. Allison is tremendous. She got up from her misstep last week and walked the tightrope to a strong performance. But, she, almost more than anyone else, has to do this every week to the end. Please see my comment from April 2nd and Simon’s reference to her “likability to America” problem for further reference. Notice, she is not in my number one position anymore…but, she should be.

1. Matt Giraud (2nd) – “Part Time Lover” by Stevie Wonder – First of all, I did not get all a flutter about this week’s performance from Matt the way the judges did. I thought it was hokey and reverted back to his Timberlake-wannabe inclination and the hat was stupid. Plus, I did not think he sang well at all with his notes being just all over the place. Our baby cried in protest as well (not good). However, this is the deal for Matt: he has the top-3 talent (vocally, performance-wise, and instrumentation-wise) for this year’s pool. And, he is much more of the down-the-middle type competitor that Adam and Allison are not. I do not say this to slight Matt. I like him overall. But, he is not my favorite.

The performances in the weeks to come are, of course, uncertain. But, if everyone brings the best of what I think they can bring, the final two should Allison and Adam. America, this is your challenge.

I would love to know what you think. Thanks.

  1. I wrote my comments last night as each performance occured - I was drinking wine and didn't want to forget anything (well, some things I wanted to forget). After reading your comments, I may need to add some more commentary. Please note that my list in order of appearance.

    - I don't care for Danny. First, he needs to keep the glasses on, he looks like a freak without them. He has a voice but all his songs sound the same to me, nothing changes. There is a fine line between making songs your own and making all your songs sound the same....Gokey is on the wrong side fo the line.

    - I dislike very much Kris Allen (I had the word Hate but feel it's too harsh - even for me). I'm confident in saying that last week was a complete fluke. The rendition was horrible and why surround yourself with 'adoring fans'? It didn't work for Matt last week, why would it work for you this week?

    - Lil Rounds, I love this girl. Unfortunately, I'm also a huge fan of Tina. Therefore, I have to agree with the judges, wasn't her best performance. Tina is a Diva - which as RAD stated, they want Lil to be but she couldn't pull it off this week. She needed to bring Diva to a different song and make it Diva. That being said - they need to fix Lil's booty and ensure that her mustache is completely removed......right there she is out of diva staus. I continue my rant....FIRE THE STYLIST!!!!

    - speaking of Divas.......HOW DARE HE.....Anoop, Ms. Lauer you are not......if I could have afforded it that girl would have sang at my wedding (and don't think I didn't look into it! - that and Rev Run performing the ceremony........sadly, I'm poor). His outfit was horrid. Okay, he can sing and when he reins it in and does a ballad, he's good but he is no Idol. Randy called it 'nice', in the words of George Carlin, 'who wants to be called nice?'. Nice is mediocre

    - Scott, well, the hair is soooooo much better. A for effort, didn't love the singing, but impressed by the change of instrument. He is looking more comfortable, but he doesn't have the talent. His personality is winning him some time here (love the "punk side" comment), sadly he won't be the 'Seabiscuit' victor we hoped for.

    - Allison, Beautiful & Lovely. Paulas lip gloss globbed on her teeth...not so lovely. Allison is ready for an album, but still needs a stylist, although this outfit was so much better than the past outfits. She's great, if she doesn't win she will still have a career.

    - Matt, brought it and he wore a hat....EXCELLENT. Sorry RAD but I find the hat covers the cranium and makes his bizarre facial expressions more subtle. Great arrangement, made it his own but still knew the song - unlike Kris Allen (took a minute or two to figure out what/who Kris was performing).

    - Adam, I am still not a fan but to deny his talent is just wrong. The song choice, his voice, the lighting, the emotion......standing ovation deserved! He my be to 'vibrant' for middle America but he will have a similiar following to David Cook in the fact that you may not love him but you pay attention to what he does and you look forward to seeing what he will do next. Bar none, Adam will be in the top two.

With last nights show running overtime, brace yourself for Paula's purging of love and admiration for him tonight. Hopefully, one of those damned stylists will make sure she doesn't have gobs of gloss on her teeth while she does it.

  2. More random musings from "Anonymous" this week:

-Since RAD opened the possibility of crossing lines by throwing the race card in Lil's hand, let me point something out to those advising Scott: There's a reason Stevie and Ray wear/wore sunglasses. Just sayin'.

-Anoop apparently didn't watch Sanjaya's season. His only chance to stay much longer is to crank up some "I like to watch him fight Simon" votes to go with his UNC frat votes. Instead, he apologized profusely for disagreeing with Paula. Even Simon called him out on being a spineless wuss.

-Matt bothers me, though I'm not sure why. There is just something "off" about him, especially in his pre-performance getting-to-know-you videos. Timothy Hutton played a poor, unknown piano player in "Beautiful Girls", but he was also incredibly cool at the core and had a core of solid, life-long friends. We'll call Matt the anti-Willie (Hutton's character in "Beautiful Girls"). Have they ever shown "Matt's Friends" in the audience? I can't remember. If they did, I bet those "friends" made the same going rate for extras that the townies in "Beautiful Girls" made.

-Kris, I don't care enough to comment. Go away.

-Danny, you sound the same every week, except when you suck. Grow some versatility or follow Kris out the door. Whatever.

-Lil, you can sing, but you need to connect with some demographic soon. If the producers feel obligated to fill your whole video with your Mom saying "Lil is short for Lillie", you might be too boring to get votes in weeks you don't kill it.

-Allison, you're still clearly better than everyone else.

-Finally, this week's performance was too low to showcase the fact that when he belts, Adam = Cher. So I'll repeat myself from last week and implore you to close your eyes next time Adam goes over the top and try NOT to picture Cher. Even if you disagree (you won't), not having to look at Adam's histrionics is still a plus!

    Until Next Time,
    The Mystery Commentor

  3. Just to clarify, I'm not blaming Scott or implying that *blind people* should be mandated to wear sunglasses or anything crazy like that. Just that it might be a good idea as a *performer* to minimize the distractions that keep viewers from focusing on your music. It was a bad idea for Allison to wear the pink outfit for the same reason...it distracted people from her music. Now, viewers focusing on Scott's singing could ultimately prove more bad than good for his chances, but that's ok. I think Scott is very brave to be doing this, and to have made it this far. I also suspect that he wants to be judged as a performer (for better or worse), not continually packaged as "The Blind Guy". No one should *tell* him to wear sunglasses, but someone should definitely suggest it. Scott has stood up to the judges repeatedly; he can take it and will say no if he wants to.

  5. even though the show ran over so my dvr didn't capture adam for posterity, i found him and simon's standing o online. it was a good "performance", my favorite of adam's, and i use that word advisedly. it's just a performance. i make this distinction--when david bowie was ziggy stardust, he WAS ziggy stardust. he wasn't ACTING ziggy stardust. adam just acts like a singer. it doesn't mean he's bad, it just means he belongs in a different venue. he's an actor who can sing, not a singer.

i only found three other things worth commenting on: 1. anoop's sweater. WTF? fire the stylists (although lil looked awesome, i thought) 2. mickey gilley. i know mickey gilley and danny gokey is no mickey gilley. let's don't insult the greats ryan. 3. allison. wow, i've been an allison fan from the start but i have to say that she pulled off that song better than i could have imagined, sounded great and not even creepy for a 16 year old to be singing it. not sure why america doesn't like her, maybe vote for the worst has more inroads than i previously thought.

    ok...8 minutes til the show!

  6. Conspiracy Theory ChiaraApril 9, 2009 at 8:45 AM

I think TMC is Mrs. RAD who has a secret interest in Idol but likes to pretend it is only her husband who is into it. LOL

  7. Now we know why they call her "Conspiracy Theory" Chiara. Black helicopters anyone? And PS where's our Wednesday post-show edition?

  8. Sorry, Chiara. TMC ain't me. Funny, I had my money on YOU.
